Jayvon Tyree Watson, a 25-year-old African American male from Springfield, Illinois, tragically lost his life on May 24, 2022. Jayvon was born on October 5, 1996, in Killeen, Texas, and was known for his vibrant personality and dedication to his family and work. He was employed as a custodian at Building Maintenance Service and had previously worked at the Crown Plaza in Springfield, where he was recognized as Employee of the Month. Jayvon was a beloved member of the Prayer Wheel C.O.G.I.C. in Springfield and was affectionately nicknamed "Obama" by his friends and family for his leadership qualities and caring nature.
On the evening of May 24, 2022, Jayvon Tyree Watson was shot multiple times in the parking lot of Seven Brothers Grocery Store located on East Laurel Street in Springfield. He was transported to HSHS St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Springfield Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting, identifying Demaro Brownlee, a 23-year-old male from Springfield, as the primary suspect. Brownlee was arrested a week later in East St. Louis by the U.S. Marshals Service's Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a dispute over lawn mowing debts between Jayvon Watson and another individual, Terrence Washington Jr., who was present at the scene with Brownlee. During the confrontation, Brownlee provided Washington with a firearm, which Washington returned to Brownlee before the latter shot Jayvon five times, including twice in the back. The case proceeded to trial, where prosecutors presented evidence including surveillance footage, cell phone records, and testimonies from witnesses and law enforcement officers. Despite the defense's arguments that there was insufficient evidence to convict Brownlee, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder.
Demaro Brownlee was subsequently convicted and is awaiting sentencing in the Sangamon County Circuit Court. The trial highlighted the thorough investigative work by the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office, which played a crucial role in securing the conviction. Jayvon Tyree Watson's death was a significant loss to his family and community, who continue to mourn the passing of a young man remembered for his kindness, hard work, and dedication to those he loved.
