On the evening of January 10, 2023, a 18-year-old male named Akhir Muhammad, made a quick stop with a friend at a Shell gas station on Snapfinger Woods Drive in Decatur, Georgia. This seemingly routine errand took a tragic turn, resulting in the untimely death of the young man who had graduated from Miller Grove High School just the year before and was training to become an electrician.
As Muhammad and his friend entered the convenience store, they walked past two individuals, Quavion
Hale, 20, and Stantavis Reese, 18. Moments after exiting the store, Muhammad was confronted by Hale and Reese, who brandished firearms and demanded the gun he was lawfully carrying. Before he could even react to their demands, both assailants opened fire, shooting him multiple times in the back. The two men then fled the scene on foot. In a brazen move, Reese returned to the scene to retrieve Muhammad's firearm and a backpack that Hale had left behind. First responders found Muhammad deceased in the parking lot.
The investigation into Akhir Muhammad's murder was swift, aided by crucial evidence from the scene. Surveillance video from the gas station captured clear images of both Hale and Reese, showing them arriving at the location and their movements inside the store just before the deadly encounter. The footage distinctly showed a unique backpack worn by Hale. Investigators were able to link this backpack to him through photos he had posted on his social media accounts, where he was seen wearing the same backpack and shoes. This digital trail proved to be a key piece of evidence leading to his identification and subsequent arrest.
Quavion Hale was apprehended on March 28, 2023, followed by the arrest of Stantavis Reese on December 8, 2023. In April 2025, a DeKalb County jury found both men guilty of a slew of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. On May 6, 2025, they were sentenced for their roles in the senseless killing. Quavion Hale received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 25 years. Stantavis Reese was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus 25 years.
