On what should have been a joyous occasion, Nicholas Bankston, a 24-year-old male, was senselessly murdered in the early morning hours of February 22, 2018, as he drove home from celebrating his own birthday. Bankston was in his vehicle with his pregnant fiancée, his children, and another adult in Decatur, Georgia, when another car pulled alongside and an occupant opened fire.
The barrage of bullets struck and killed Bankston, tragically ending a life full of promise in front of his loved ones.
The hours leading up to Bankston's death were marked by a string of what police would later describe as random acts of violence. Before the fatal encounter with Bankston, the same assailant had allegedly shot and wounded two other drivers in separate incidents in Atlanta. The first shooting occurred on Interstate 20, and the second on Fulton Street, leaving both victims with injuries they were expected to survive. These attacks appeared to be without motive, creating a climate of fear as a shooter terrorized the roads.
The investigation swiftly led authorities to a suspect, Mikeal Demond Callaway, then 24 years old. A tip about a silver Infiniti SUV, the vehicle reportedly used in the shootings, proved crucial. Investigators located the SUV, which had been hastily spray-painted black in an apparent attempt to alter its appearance. When Callaway returned to the vehicle, he led police on a brief chase before being apprehended. A female passenger in the car with Callaway was initially taken into custody but was later released, with authorities determining she was an unwilling participant.
In January 2020, a DeKalb County jury convicted Mikeal Callaway for the murder of Nicholas Bankston. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 145 years. Beyond the murder conviction, Callaway was also found guilty of charges related to shooting at the other occupants in Bankston's car. Following his conviction in DeKalb County, he still faced charges in Fulton County for the two earlier, non-fatal shootings. The motive for the random and violent spree that ended Nicholas Bankston's life remains unclear.
