In the early morning hours of May 2, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn stillness of a Stone Mountain, Georgia neighborhood, leaving two men dead and two others wounded in what authorities have described as a drug-related shooting. Among the deceased was 36-year-old Twayne Worthy. The violent encounter unfolded around 3 a.m. in the 4600 block of Cedar Park Trail, where police were called to the scene of a quadruple shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim
scene. Twayne Worthy and another man, identified as 36-year-old Deenay Munford, had both sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A third man, 32-year-old Brandon Johnson, was found at the location with injuries and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment. As the investigation progressed, a fourth individual connected to the incident was located at a different hospital, suffering from gunshot wounds to his legs. This individual was later identified as 27-year-old Jamal Cook.
Investigators with the DeKalb County Police Department quickly began to piece together the events that led to the deadly shootout. Their preliminary findings suggested that the motive behind the violence was connected to drug activities. In the wake of the shooting, both of the surviving men were implicated in the deaths of Worthy and Munford. Brandon Johnson, who was injured at the scene, is now facing felony murder charges. Jamal Cook has also been charged with two counts of felony murder and one count of aggravated assault in connection with the incident. The investigation into the specifics of what transpired in the moments leading up to the fatal shots remains ongoing.
