In the winter of 2019, a dispute over a dog in a Stone Mountain, Georgia, apartment complex tragically cut short the life of 28-year-old Jordan McPherson. The young man, a resident of the complex on South Hairston Road, was attempting to retrieve his dogs, which had gotten loose, when the fatal encounter occurred. It was on December 30th that one of McPherson's friendly dogs approached Rontell Devon Shelton, another resident of the complex.
The situation escalated when Shelton kicked the
dog. McPherson, witnessing the act, approached Shelton to question his actions. This confrontation, however, proved to be deadly. In front of two children, aged 12 and 15, Shelton produced a firearm and shot McPherson multiple times. Emergency services were called to the scene, but McPherson's injuries were too severe, and he died at the apartment complex. The senselessness of the violence left neighbors and the community in shock.
The investigation into McPherson's death quickly identified Shelton as the suspect. The case against him was strengthened by a previous, non-fatal shooting that had occurred just eleven days prior at the same apartment complex. Ballistics testing confirmed that the same weapon was used in both incidents. The earlier victim, who had initially been reluctant to press charges, came forward and identified Shelton as his assailant.
Rontell Devon Shelton was arrested and stood trial for the murder of Jordan McPherson and the earlier assault. In April 2025, a DeKalb County jury found the 40-year-old guilty of Malice Murder, Felony Murder, and multiple counts of Aggravated Assault and firearms offenses. Following the conviction, a judge sentenced Shelton to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 25 years to be served.
