In the early morning hours of June 24, 2023, the life of 21-year-old Jaylon Thomas Smith was tragically cut short in Valdosta, Georgia. Responding to numerous 911 calls about a shooting at approximately 3:09 a.m., Valdosta Police Officers arrived at the 500 block of North St. Augustine Road to find Smith with a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate efforts of Emergency Medical Services, the young African American male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Born in Valdosta on November 5, 2001, Jaylon was a product of the Valdosta City School System where he was known for his athletic abilities, participating in both baseball and football. These pursuits earned him many close friends and he was remembered for living life to the fullest. His sudden death left his family, including his mother, father, and stepfather, devastated.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led detectives to identify 19-year-old Jaquan Walton as a person of interest. Two days after the shooting, on June 26, 2023, arrest warrants were issued for Walton for felony murder and aggravated assault. Considered armed and dangerous, a public alert was issued seeking information on his whereabouts. The search for Walton concluded on July 5, 2023, when he turned himself in to the Valdosta Police Department.
Further investigation revealed a larger criminal enterprise at play. In February 2025, a Lowndes County Grand Jury indicted Jaquan Walton, then 20, and six other individuals on racketeering charges. The indictment alleged their involvement as members of the '528' street gang. The gang was accused of a series of violent crimes, including the murder of Jaylon Smith. The sweeping 44-count indictment connected the defendants to a pattern of criminal activity that also included another homicide, armed robbery, and aggravated assault in and around the Valdosta area.
