In the early morning hours of July 5, 2020, a life was tragically cut short in Valdosta, Georgia. Jeffery Jequez Franklin, an 18-year-old male from Cook County, was attending a small party at a residence on Lenox Drive. An altercation broke out at the gathering, escalating into a violent confrontation. During the course of the fight, a firearm was introduced, and Franklin sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his torso. Despite the efforts of police and civilians who rendered first aid until emergency medical technicians arrived, Jeffery was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led detectives to identify a suspect. Travis Graham, 20 years old at the time, was identified as the individual who fired the shot that killed Franklin. Later that same day, Graham turned himself in to the authorities at the Valdosta Police Department. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Lowndes County Jail. The charges brought against him included felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The basis of the appeal centered on the claim that Graham's attorney was ineffectual for not adequately arguing that he was acting in defense of his property during the trial. The appeal detailed that the incident began after individuals unknown to Graham arrived at his house party and he attempted to get them to leave, leading to a physical altercation where Graham was reportedly beaten before he retrieved a rifle from his car.
