In the quiet city of Valdosta, Georgia, a tragic event unfolded on the night of November 13, 2016, forever altering the lives of one family. On that Sunday evening, at a residence in the 2400 block of Knox Drive, 25-year-old Brian Keith Moore was fatally shot. Officers from the Valdosta Police Department responded to a call around 9:45 p.m. and discovered Moore deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound.
The investigation into his death would soon reveal a complex and tragic story of a robbery gone wrong and a subsequent act of retribution.
Brian, an athletic young man and a graduate of Lowndes High School's class of 2010 where he played football, was also the brother of then-Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith. His life was cut short in what police described as an isolated and not a random act. Investigators determined that Moore was the victim of an attempted robbery. The man identified as the shooter was 20-year-old Emory Austin Carter Jr., who, accompanied by another individual, had gone to Moore's home with the intent to rob him. During the commission of this crime, Carter shot and killed Moore.
The aftermath of Moore's death was further complicated by the actions of those close to him. It was reported that a friend of Moore's removed a handgun and narcotics from the scene before the police arrived. Furthermore, it came to light that members of Moore's own family became aware that Carter was the person responsible for his death but did not share this information with law enforcement. This silence, according to the Valdosta Police Chief, significantly hindered their investigation and prevented the timely arrest of the suspect.
Tragically, the street justice that followed claimed another life. On November 28, 2016, Emory Austin Carter Jr. was himself shot and killed on the 600 block of East Ann Street in what was believed to be a retaliatory act for Moore's murder. In the wake of these two interconnected homicides, authorities made several arrests. Justin Emanuel Brown, 28, was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with Carter's death. Malik Griffin, 20, faced charges of aggravated assault related to the death of Brian Keith Moore, and 23-year-old Jordan Williams was charged with tampering with evidence and making a false statement.
