In the late morning of a Sunday in Valdosta, Georgia, the life of 33-year-old Octavius Marshun McDougal, an African American male, was tragically cut short. On February 11, 2024, at approximately 11:20 a.m., a series of frantic calls to E911 reported a shooting in the 500 block of Moody Drive. When Valdosta Police Officers arrived at the scene, they discovered McDougal with severe trauma to his torso. Despite their immediate life-saving efforts and the swift response of Emergency Medical Services who transported him to a local hospital, McDougal succumbed to his injuries. His body was later sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
The Valdosta Police Department's Bureau of Investigative Services immediately launched a homicide investigation. Detectives and crime scene personnel descended upon the quiet residential street, beginning the painstaking process of gathering evidence and speaking with potential witnesses. From the outset, investigators believed the shooting to be an isolated incident and quickly identified a person of interest. As days turned into weeks, the department urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors on social media, emphasizing that such speculation could hinder their investigation, and encouraged anyone with credible information to come forward through official channels.
After an intensive investigation that spanned nearly two months, a breakthrough was made. On April 1, 2024, detectives secured arrest warrants for 22-year-old Zykenzie Jeremiah Calhoun, an African American male from the nearby city of Lakeland. The following day, at around 11:00 a.m., authorities located Calhoun in the 1400 block of East Park Avenue and took him into custody without incident. At the time of his arrest, Calhoun was found to be in possession of a firearm that had been illegally modified with an automatic switch.
Calhoun was subsequently transported to the Lowndes County Jail. He faces a slate of serious charges, including murder during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Authorities have indicated that further charges may be pending as the investigation continues. The Valdosta Police Chief commended the tireless efforts of the detectives, stating that their dedication brought a measure of resolution to McDougal's grieving family.
