In the late afternoon of September 27, 2023, a drug deal in Valdosta, Georgia, turned deadly, leaving one man dead and two others facing murder charges. The deceased was identified as 26-year-old Elijah Davis. The incident, which unfolded in a parking lot on Willie Houseal Drive, was described by police as a narcotics transaction that went tragically wrong.
Valdosta Police responded to multiple calls around 2:09 p.m. reporting shootings in different areas of the city.
One caller directed them to the parking lot where they discovered Davis with fatal gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. In another part of the city, officers found 21-year-old Ryeshon Young in a car with a gunshot wound to his leg. A third individual, 34-year-old Malcom Cooper, was found in a separate vehicle heading to South Georgia Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Investigators determined that all three men were involved in the same drug transaction that escalated to an exchange of gunfire. Following their treatment at the hospital, both Cooper and Young were arrested. They both face charges of felony murder, felony aggravated assault, and felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Cooper faced additional charges, including felony criminal attempt to purchase marijuana, misdemeanor giving a false name and date of birth, and felony fugitive from justice. He also had multiple outstanding arrest warrants from Florida, one of which was for murder. Cooper reportedly told officers that he had been 'on the run' for three years. A third person, a 22-year-old who drove Cooper to the hospital, was also charged with the use of a communication facility to facilitate a felony. Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan stated that the shooting was an isolated incident and expressed relief that no innocent bystanders were harmed, as the event took place near a park and a school.
