On July 19, 2023, 24-year-old Rahil Surani was fatally shot during an apparent armed robbery at a BP gas station located at 2155 Flat Shoals Road in DeKalb County, Georgia, just north of Interstate 20. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. while Surani was outside the gas station, posting display signs. According to authorities, the shooter opened fire, hitting Surani twice, and then emptied the cash register before fleeing the scene, leaving Surani dead on the floor.
