Elijah John Brookshire was a beloved partner, father, son, and brother who worked with his hands and loved to create music. Born on January 4, 2001, in Austell, Georgia, the 25-year-old male from Dallas, Georgia, was known to his family and friends as a skilled construction worker who took on various side jobs. He had a passion for music, particularly rap, and enjoyed both listening to his favorite artists and making his own songs. Above all, Elijah was a family man.
His loved ones remember him as a devoted father to his young daughter, Winter. In a public plea for answers, his family wrote, "He was a son, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, a friend — and most importantly, he was a father to a precious one-year-old daughter who now has to grow up without her daddy."
On the afternoon of Sunday, September 27, 2026, Elijah’s life was cut short by gun violence in southwest Atlanta. Around 1:40 p.m., Atlanta Police Department officers responded to reports of a person shot in the 3200 block of Cushman Circle SW, at the Hidden Pines Apartment complex. Investigators believe the shooting followed an argument that took place while children were playing nearby. When police arrived at the apartment complex, they learned that Elijah, suffering from a gunshot wound, had been put into a gray 2010 Mazda by someone attempting to drive him to Grady Memorial Hospital.
The journey to the hospital was tragically interrupted. While en route, the driver noticed that Elijah was no longer breathing and pulled the car over at 1192 Michael Langford Drive SW. Emergency medical personnel were called to that location, but it was too late. Elijah John Brookshire was pronounced dead at the scene. The Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide Unit immediately began an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
The investigation into Elijah's murder is active and ongoing. In the weeks following the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department asked for the public's help in identifying a person of interest. They released surveillance video showing a suspect who was seen wearing dark green joggers, black socks, and no shoes, with a black tank top draped over his shoulder. The shooting was the first of two homicides to occur at the same apartment complex in less than 36 hours, raising concerns about safety in the community and prompting police to install mobile surveillance cameras in the area. As of October 2026, no arrests had been made.
Elijah’s family has been left with heartbreak and unanswered questions. "In a matter of moments, a young man who was deeply loved by his family and friends was taken from us," they shared in a public statement. They held a memorial visitation for Elijah on October 6, 2026, at Benson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made in his memory to Elevate Atlanta, an organization that works to empower inner-city youth. His family continues to advocate for him, determined to see justice served. "His daughter deserves to one day know that her father was loved, that his life mattered, and that his family never stopped seeking answers and justice for him," they wrote.
The case remains unsolved. The Atlanta Police Department and Elijah's family are urging anyone with information to come forward. Crime Stoppers Atlanta is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. Tipsters can remain anonymous by calling the Crime Stoppers tip line at 404-577-TIPS (8477) or by visiting their website. The family’s message is clear: "Someone out there knows something, and one piece of information could make a difference."
