On the night of October 27, 2022, a beloved member of the community, 54-year-old Dean Phillips, lost his life in a senseless act of violence in the parking lot of Manuel's Tavern, an iconic Atlanta institution. A married father of five, Phillips was leaving the Poncey-Highland establishment at around 11 p.m. when he noticed a man attempting to break into vehicles.
In a final act of his well-known protective nature, he confronted the individual, urging other patrons to call the police.
The confrontation took a fatal turn when the suspect, who was attempting the break-ins, shot Phillips in the chest. Despite the immediate efforts of patrons and employees to render aid by applying pressure to his wound, Phillips succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The shooter then fled in a waiting getaway car, leaving a family and community to grapple with the sudden and tragic loss.
In the months that followed, the Atlanta Police Department launched an investigation, releasing a surveillance photo of a person of interest, a man dressed in all black, inside a convenience store. A reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible was increased to $10,000, a testament to the community's desire for justice for a man described as having a 'heart of gold.' Phillips was remembered not only as a devoted husband who would have celebrated his 23rd wedding anniversary just days after his death, but also as a dedicated mentor to young people and the founder of a foundation that provided beds for underprivileged children.
