On the night of October 27, 2022, a beloved member of the community, 54-year-old Dean Phillips, lost his life in a senseless act of violence in the parking lot of Manuel's Tavern, an iconic Atlanta institution. A married father of five, Phillips was leaving the Poncey-Highland establishment at around 11 p.m. when he noticed a man attempting to break into vehicles. In a final act of his well-known protective nature, he confronted the individual, urging other patrons to call the police.
