In the early evening of September 3, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the Mechanicsville neighborhood of southwest Atlanta. On the 400 block of Whitehall Street, amidst the everyday scenes of a gas station and a chicken wing restaurant, 30-year-old Alexus Anderson was struck by bullets in what authorities would later describe as a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m., leaving Anderson critically injured.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported her to a nearby hospital, where she fought for her life.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. Based on a description of the SUV involved in the drive-by, the Georgia State Patrol located the vehicle the following day, on September 4th. Two suspects were taken into custody: a brother and sister duo, 20-year-old Joshua Crawford and 30-year-old Kelsey Anne-Taylor Crawford, both from Atlanta. Initially, they faced charges related to the assault. Joshua Crawford was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and attempting to flee from police, while his sister, Kelsey Anne-Taylor Crawford, was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Tragically, Alexus Anderson succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Following her death, the charges against the Crawford siblings were upgraded to murder. While arrests were made, law enforcement officials did not release any information regarding a potential motive for the shooting that ended a young life. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting remains ongoing.
