JaVuntae Markel Vaughn, a 17-year-old Black male, had a future filled with promise. Affectionately known as 'Hyphen' to his family and friends, he was a 2024 graduate of A.Z. Kelsey Academy in the Griffin-Spalding County school system. He had plans to attend Alabama State University and aspired to enlist in the United States Navy. Known for his charming personality, humility, and a smile that could light up a room, JaVuntae enjoyed playing baseball, cooking, shopping, and spending time with his
siblings and friends.
Tragically, his life was cut short by gun violence on May 6, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia. The incident occurred near the Georgia Tech campus on Marietta Street NW, where he was discovered deceased in an apartment breezeway. Another individual was also shot and critically injured during the event.
As of late January 2026, the Atlanta Police Department had not publicly identified any suspects in the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. JaVuntae's untimely death has left a significant void in the lives of his family and friends, who remember him for his playful spirit and bright ambitions.
