In a tragic turn of events on June 19, 2023, 18-year-old Quentyn “Red” Burgess, a Black male, was shot and killed in Atlanta, Georgia. The incident occurred at the Villages at Carver apartments on Moury Avenue, where a gathering was being held to remember two other teenagers who had lost their lives to gun violence at the very same location one year earlier.
As mourners came together for a balloon release to honor the memories of Nyriek Olds and Jamarquez McCrary, gunfire erupted,
causing panic and chaos. Burgess was struck by multiple bullets and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A 19-year-old man, identified as Kobe McCrary, was also shot in the elbow during the incident but survived.
The Atlanta Police Department is actively investigating the shooting and has sought public assistance in identifying two male suspects. Surveillance footage showing the persons of interest in the vicinity of the apartment complex around the time of the shooting has been released by authorities. Despite these efforts, there have been no arrests announced in connection with the murder of Quentyn Burgess. Investigators have considered the possibility that the shooting may have been retaliatory, connected to the previous year's homicides, but have not confirmed a definitive motive.
