In the spring of 2017, a life full of promise was tragically cut short at a gas station in southwest Atlanta. DaRonald Wilkerson, a 17-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of Friday, April 21, 2017. A junior at Benjamin E. Mays High School, DaRonald was remembered by his family as a funny, kind, and caring young man who had dreams of a future in the entertainment industry.
He was one of six children and was described as a gentleman with a kind heart who loved to laugh, enjoyed music, and had a keen sense of fashion.
On that fateful evening, DaRonald was in a car with his older brother and two other individuals at a Texaco gas station on Sylvan Road. An argument is said to have erupted among the occupants of the vehicle. It was during this dispute that one of the individuals in the car opened fire, striking DaRonald multiple times. Following the shooting, several people were seen fleeing from the vehicle. The car they were in was later reported as stolen.
The investigation into DaRonald's death moved swiftly. Atlanta police released images of persons of interest who were seen running from the scene. This led to the arrest of 19-year-old Darryl Oliver on the Monday following the shooting. Oliver was subsequently charged with murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault in connection with the death of DaRonald Wilkerson. Police also sought a second person who was seen in surveillance footage near the gas station, believing them to be a witness.
In the wake of their devastating loss, DaRonald's family held a candlelight vigil, where friends and loved ones gathered to share memories of the high school junior. His mother expressed her profound grief and her desperate desire to understand what led to her son's death. The family faced financial hardship in arranging for his funeral, but an outpouring of community support and donations enabled them to give him a proper farewell. Funeral services for DaRonald Wilkerson were held in May 2017.
