In the early morning hours of August 3, 2023, the life of 34-year-old Brianna Latrell Mitchell was tragically cut short in Albany, Georgia. Responding to reports of gunfire on the 1300 block of Society Avenue at approximately 3:30 a.m., Albany Police Department officers discovered a grim scene. Brianna and another woman, 40-year-old Shenetta Holmes, were both found suffering from gunshot wounds to their abdomens.
Both women were rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Brianna Mitchell succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Shenetta Holmes, however, survived the shooting and was reported to be recovering.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect. In September 2023, the Albany Police Department announced the arrest of 32-year-old Antwan Jamell Smith in connection with the incident. Information gathered during the investigation pointed to Smith's involvement, leading police to a residence on the 1600 block of Gardner Drive. A search of the location resulted in the seizure of three firearms and two ounces of marijuana.
At the time of his arrest, Antwan Jamell Smith was being held at the Dougherty County Jail on active probation violation warrants. Law enforcement officials indicated that additional charges related to the deadly shooting were expected to be filed against him. The authorities also began investigating whether the firearms recovered during the search were connected to other criminal cases in the Albany area.
