In the winter of 2017, a domestic dispute in Albany, Georgia, escalated into a tragic and violent episode that claimed the lives of two women and left three other people wounded. On the morning of January 26th, police were called to a residence on Maryland Drive where they discovered a grim scene. Inside, 67-year-old Brenda Forrester and her 24-year-old granddaughter, Keyon Branch, had been fatally shot.
The ensuing investigation quickly identified Jessie Clarence Brown Jr., who was 31 at the time, as the suspect. Brown had been in an ongoing relationship with Keyon Branch. Authorities reported that Brown had driven from a neighboring county in a stolen truck belonging to his boss before confronting his girlfriend. The altercation turned deadly, resulting in the deaths of Branch and her grandmother, Brenda Forrester. Three other individuals at the residence were also shot and injured during the attack. One of the surviving victims, Qua'shawn Branch, was left a paraplegic from the shooting.
Law enforcement initiated a search for Brown, who had fled the scene in the stolen pickup truck. He was apprehended a short time later and taken into custody. Brown was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The gravity of the crime led the Dougherty County District Attorney's office to seek the death penalty in the case against him.
As the case progressed through the legal system, a plea deal was ultimately reached. In exchange for pleading guilty to felony murder and aggravated battery, the death penalty was taken off the table. A Dougherty County Superior Court judge sentenced Jessie Clarence Brown to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 30 years to be served consecutively. This sentence ensured that Brown would spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for the double homicide that cut short the lives of Brenda Forrester and Keyon Branch.
