In the quiet city of Albany, Georgia, the life of 28-year-old Jessica Nicole Bryant, an African American woman, was abruptly and violently ended on October 18, 2014. On that day, a masked individual forced entry into her home on South Cleveland Street and shot her. The brutal act was witnessed by another woman and several children who were present in the residence at the time. According to the witness accounts, the assailant kicked in the back door before opening fire on Bryant while she was holding one of the children. She was rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.
For three years, the investigation into Jessica Bryant's murder remained a cold case, leaving her family and the community in a state of uncertainty and grief. Investigators with the Albany Police Department faced significant challenges, as they had no initial leads and potential witnesses were reluctant to come forward due to fear. However, with the passage of time, individuals became more willing to speak with law enforcement, which eventually led to a major breakthrough in the case. The investigation also uncovered a connection between Bryant's murder and the death of another Albany resident, Jimmy Jackson, who had been reported missing in July 2015 and whose remains were later discovered in Terrell County.
In September 2017, the Albany Police Department announced a significant development in the long-unsolved case. Danta Bernad Brown of Albany was arrested and charged with murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault in connection with the deaths of both Jessica Bryant and Jimmy Jackson. Authorities also identified three other suspects: Dawayne Lamontrail Anderson, Ronell Lee Tidwell, and Zackteria Ushone White, who faced the same charges. The U.S. Marshals were enlisted to help locate Tidwell and White, who were believed to have fled the state. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies led to the apprehension of Ronell Tidwell in Cincinnati, Ohio, in December 2017. The arrests brought a sense of closure to the families of both victims, who had long awaited justice.
