In the early morning hours of November 12, a dispute in downtown Atlanta escalated to gunfire, ending the life of 25-year-old Jason Ogbomoh. A beloved computer science teacher at Marietta Middle School, Ogbomoh was found by Atlanta police on Peachtree Street SW with multiple gunshot wounds shortly after 3 a.m. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Known affectionately as 'Mr.
O' by his students, Ogbomoh had taught at the school for two years and was remembered as a mentor, role model, and a source of inspiration. His principal noted that his passion for teaching was evident in every lesson and that his commitment to his students was unwavering. Beyond his work as an educator, Ogbomoh was a musician and was also pursuing a master's degree in computer science at Georgia State University.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify a suspect. Nearly a month after the incident, 30-year-old Leroy Hinton was arrested in connection with Ogbomoh's death. Hinton was taken into custody by the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and members of the Atlanta Police Department's Fugitive Unit.
Hinton has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. According to some reports, Hinton is listed as homeless in court records. Following his arrest, Hinton was booked into the Fulton County Jail and was denied bond during his first court appearance. While an arrest has been made, authorities have emphasized that the charges are not indicative of a conviction and that the case will proceed through the legal system.
