In the autumn of 2021, a domestic dispute in a southwest Atlanta townhouse community tragically escalated, claiming the life of 35-year-old Keith Bell, a Black/African American male. On the afternoon of October 28, 2021, police were called to the Fairburn Townhouses on Fairburn Road, where they discovered Bell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was a resident of the complex and was rushed to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on November 1, 2021.
The shooting marked another homicide in a year of rising violence in the city.
The investigation into Bell's death quickly focused on a suspect, Jermaine Harlow. According to reports, the fatal encounter began with a heated argument between Harlow and Bell's step-daughter. Bell intervened, asking Harlow to leave his home. This seemingly simple request led to Harlow allegedly shooting Bell in the back. In the weeks following the shooting, Harlow remained at large, and the Atlanta Police Department publicly identified him as the suspect, releasing his photo and warning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
While on the run, Harlow allegedly began to threaten Keith Bell's grieving family in an attempt to dissuade them from cooperating with law enforcement. Family members reported that Harlow was leaving threatening letters in the mailbox of Bell's mother's father, vowing to harm her. Despite these threats, Bell's family remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice. Their perseverance paid off when, on December 26, 2021, Jermaine Harlow was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Keith Bell's death.
