On a Saturday evening in Columbus, Georgia, tragedy struck a local family and community. Mondrell Gordon, a 17-year-old Black male, was in the parking lot of a Piggly Wiggly grocery store located in the 2400 block of Woodruff Farm Road on November 18, 2023. At approximately 5:40 p.m., the ordinary setting of a grocery store parking lot was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
When Columbus Police officers arrived at the scene in response to a call about a shooting, they discovered the young man suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were promptly dispatched to the location. Medics attended to Gordon before transporting him to Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital for urgent care. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Mondrell Gordon succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident was classified as a death investigation by the authorities who began to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
In the weeks that followed the incident, the investigation into Gordon's death continued. However, as of mid-December 2023, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects in the shooting.
