In the quiet, early morning hours of November 26, 2023, a sudden act of violence shattered the peace of the Lokchapee Landing neighborhood in Macon, Georgia, ending the life of 50-year-old Brian Matthew Brown. A male resident of the community, Brown was a talented and multifaceted individual, known for his skills as a self-taught carpenter and his passion for health and wellness, which included rock climbing, bicycling, and CrossFit competitions. He was also a third-generation mover who had expanded the family business after graduating from Mercer University with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting.
Just after 1:30 a.m., gunshots echoed through the neighborhood. It is believed that an alarm near his truck prompted Brown to step outside his home. Responding to reports of a shooting, Bibb County Sheriff's deputies arrived to find Brown suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators suspected that Brown may have been alerted to individuals breaking into cars in the area. Shortly after the gunshots, a silver SUV was seen leaving the location.
The investigation into Brian Matthew Brown's death led to two arrests. On January 31, 2024, a 16-year-old male from Macon was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was booked into the Bibb County Regional Youth Detention Center. This individual also faced three counts of aggravated assault from a separate incident that occurred in January 2024.
Further investigation identified a second suspect, 19-year-old Brian Latrell Colbert Jr., who was wanted in connection with Brown's murder since late April. On July 21, 2024, Colbert was arrested without incident at a downtown Macon apartment complex. He was charged with the murder of Brian Matthew Brown and also faced additional charges from a separate incident, including four counts of aggravated assault, one count of criminal damage to property, and one count of cruelty to children. Colbert is currently being held at the Bibb County Jail without bond as the legal proceedings continue. In the wake of the tragedy, friends, family, and neighbors held a private vigil to honor and remember a man described as a 'beautiful person' who was a successful entrepreneur with many God-given talents.
