In the quiet darkness of a Friday night in Athens, Georgia, a tragic story of domestic violence reached its fatal conclusion. On December 1, 2023, 26-year-old Juliana Navarnete-Moreno, a female resident of Athens, arrived at a home on Massey Lane. She was not alone; with her was 20-year-old Hugo Martinez-Cerritos. Their arrival, however, was met with violence that would abruptly end their lives and that of another.
As they sat in a 2013 Toyota Camry, they were approached by 31-year-old Mangell Maivena, a man from Juliana's past with whom she had been in a domestic relationship. An argument broke out between them, a domestic dispute that quickly and horrifically escalated to gunfire. In a senseless act of violence, Maivena opened fire, shooting both Juliana and Hugo before turning the gun on himself.
The Athens-Clarke County Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:55 p.m. following a report of an aggravated assault. When they arrived, they discovered a grim tableau. Juliana Navarnete-Moreno was found deceased at the scene, her life stolen by the gunfire. Mangell Maivena also lay dead, having taken his own life after committing the heinous act.
Hugo Martinez-Cerritos was found with life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries two days later on December 3, 2023. The investigation that followed confirmed the incident as a double murder-suicide, a devastating end to a domestic dispute that left a community in mourning.
