In the early morning hours of October 28, 2022, the life of 20-year-old Ndya Hill, an African American woman from Athens, Georgia, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded at the Rolling Ridge Apartments where Hill was shot multiple times. Responding to the sound of gunfire, Athens-Clarke County police officers on patrol discovered Hill and a wounded 17-year-old male at the scene. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from the officers and being transported to a local hospital, Hill succumbed to her injuries. The 17-year-old victim, who had also been shot more than once, survived the attack.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 18-year-old Daviae Massir Oliver on November 30, 2022. He was subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the incident. Authorities reported that Hill and Oliver were acquainted, and the shooting reportedly stemmed from an argument over derogatory comments Hill had made. The dispute escalated, culminating in the fatal gunfire.
In December 2023, the legal proceedings against Daviae Massir Oliver, who was then 19, came to a resolution. He accepted a plea bargain, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the death of Ndya Hill and aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the 17-year-old male. As a result of the plea agreement, the initial murder charge was dismissed. Oliver was sentenced to 35 years in prison, to be followed by 10 years of probation.
