In a tragic and violent end to what was described as a tumultuous relationship, Esnati Thalani Gurura, a 48-year-old Zimbabwean woman, was found deceased in her Athens, Georgia, apartment on November 5, 2024. An investigation revealed she had been fatally shot in the face the previous day, an act of domestic violence that abruptly ended her life.

The grim discovery was made after her 27-year-old boyfriend, Kendall Elon Boone, unexpectedly appeared at the police headquarters and informed an officer of a dead body at his Royale Road residence. Though he initially agreed to lead them to the apartment, officers lost sight of him in traffic. Subsequently, property management confirmed that Boone shared the apartment with Gurura. A welfare check by the police led to the heartbreaking discovery of her body. Near her hand, a phone suggested she had been in the middle of a conversation when her life was taken. It was later learned she had been on the phone with a family member, expressing concern about Boone having a gun and his suicidal behavior.

Their relationship was known to be volatile, with neighbors reporting arguments and sounds of fighting emanating from their apartment. Co-workers of Gurura described Boone as jealous and controlling, often showing up at her workplace to monitor her. In the wake of the discovery, Boone presented a conflicting account to the police. He claimed he was not present during the shooting and had found Gurura's body after hearing gunshots and someone fleeing the scene. He even suggested that a criminal he had investigated in his cybersecurity work could be responsible. Boone admitted to having memory gaps about what transpired after finding her and to taking a shower at a new apartment they were planning to move to before contacting the authorities.

Despite his claims, investigators found a spent 9mm shell casing at the crime scene and magazines for a 9mm pistol at the new apartment. Kendall Elon Boone was arrested and subsequently charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. A grand jury later indicted him on these charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty. He is being held without bail as he awaits trial. The community was left to mourn the loss of a woman described by her family as a beloved daughter, sister, and friend with a vibrant spirit and unwavering dedication to her loved ones.
