On a Christmas Eve that should have been filled with festive cheer, a tragedy unfolded in Augusta, Georgia. In the late hours of December 24, 2023, Steve Luke, a 36-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot in the backyard of his residence on Boykin Road. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight, casting a somber shadow over the holiday for his family and community.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office launched an immediate
investigation into the homicide. For over a week, details were scarce, and no suspects were publicly identified. The community was left to grapple with the senseless violence that had cut short the life of a man known to be an associate at Amick Farms, with skills in Sustainable Livestock Production.
The break in the case came on January 6, 2024, when authorities, including the U.S. Marshals Service, apprehended 18-year-old Wyzier Holt in connection with the shooting. Holt, also a resident of Augusta, was taken into custody near his home on James Drive. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Further investigation into Holt's background revealed a prior criminal history. He had previously been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 death of a 16-year-old and had been released from juvenile detention after serving 18 months. The arrest of Holt brought a sense of resolution to the search for a suspect, though the motive for the Christmas Eve shooting was not immediately released.
