On January 8, 2023, 62-year-old Barry Monoochee Lew was fatally shot outside the Sleep Inn hotel located at 1050 Claussen Road in Augusta, Georgia. This incident marked the first recorded homicide of the year in Richmond County.
Lew, a homeless man, was found by Richmond County deputies at 2:10 p.m. after they responded to a shooting call. He had been shot and was rushed to Augusta University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m..
