On the evening of July 24, 2019, Malik Harvey, an 18-year-old Black man, was with his friend Jahlil Brickhouse, 20, at the Glenwood Apartments on Lumpkin Road in Augusta, Georgia. An encounter that began as a drug deal suddenly erupted in gunfire. Both Harvey and Brickhouse were struck by bullets and rushed to Augusta University Medical Center, but their injuries were too severe.
They were pronounced dead at approximately 11 p.m.
Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office soon determined that the shooting occurred during an attempted armed robbery. According to the indictment, Harvey and Brickhouse were meeting with two other men for a marijuana deal when one of them, Day’Shon Antoine Kimble, pulled out a handgun and tried to rob Brickhouse. The other man, Ryan Marquise Taylor, and Brickhouse both drew their own firearms in response, and shots were fired. In the ensuing chaos, both Harvey and Brickhouse were fatally wounded. The district attorney later stated that Kimble had devised the plan to rob Brickhouse and shot him in the back when he fought back.
The investigation quickly led to arrests. The morning after the shooting, police took Ryan Marquise Latrell Taylor, then 29, into custody and charged him with two counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Investigators had stated from the beginning that they believed two people were responsible. In August 2019, they identified Day’Shon Antoine Kimble, then 21, as the second suspect. He turned himself in to authorities and faced the same charges as Taylor.
Both men were indicted for the double homicide. In June 2023, Day’Shon Kimble stood trial for the murders. A Richmond County jury deliberated for only a few minutes before finding him guilty. A judge sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years. As of June 2023, the case against his co-defendant, Ryan Marquise Taylor, was still pending.
