In the quiet town of Covington, Georgia, a domestic dispute on May 9, 2024, ended in the tragic death of 35-year-old Antoinne Chimon Canady Sr., a Black / African American man from Atlanta. The incident unfolded at a residence on Lakeside Circle, where Canady was shot and killed by Nicole Fletcher, a resident of Covington. According to the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute, though the specific details of what led to the altercation remain unclear.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Fletcher and another woman crying in the road. Fletcher was detained and placed in a patrol vehicle. Canady was discovered slumped over on the front porch of the home, unconscious and not breathing. The on-call investigator, crime scene investigator, and the coroner all responded to the scene to begin their investigation. A technical malfunction with the responding officer's body camera, attributed to heavy rain, meant the initial interaction was not recorded.

Antoinne, known affectionately as “Ant” and “Ace,” was born on November 30, 1988, in Opelika, Alabama. He served in the United States Navy starting in 2008 before moving to Atlanta. He was a devoted father to his two children, Amariyah and Antoinne Canady Jr. Remembered as a loving and selfless person, he was known for his charitable donations to the homeless and his passion for travel, having visited almost every state and numerous countries. A huge sports fan, he ardently supported Alabama and the New England Patriots. He also coached his son's T-ball team and was a member of a car club.
