On the evening of July 4, 2016, in Covington, Georgia, the life of 24-year-old Julien R. Wyant was tragically cut short. An aspiring professional boxer, Wyant, an African American male, was discovered around 8 p.m. at the Orchard Cove apartment complex on Grosslake Parkway. He was found lying face down in a parking area, having been shot multiple times.
The Newton County Sheriff's Office launched a thorough investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect, Nathaniel L. Barnes, who was 25 years old at the time. On July 15, 2016, a joint operation involving the Newton County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division, the Warrant Division, and the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Task Force resulted in Barnes's arrest during a traffic stop. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Julien Wyant.
In a turn of events in August 2017, Nathaniel Barnes pleaded guilty to the murder in Newton County Superior Court. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Wyant had sustained three gunshot wounds, two to his back and one to his head. At the time of the murder, Barnes was on probation for a 2014 cocaine conviction. As part of a negotiated plea deal, Barnes was sentenced to life in prison. Under the terms of his sentence, he will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. During the sentencing, Wyant's mother, Tanya, delivered a victim impact statement, describing her son as a caring individual who looked after his family and expressing the profound and lasting damage his loss has inflicted upon their lives.
