Newton County sheriff's deputies arrived at the roadside to render aid until emergency medical services could take over. Despite their efforts, Henry was pronounced deceased upon arrival at a local hospital.
The initial investigation at the scene on Kristen Place quickly pointed to a suspect who had fled on foot. The person sought was identified as 18-year-old Jalyn Lashaud Colbert of Conyers, who was known to the victim and had been a visitor at the house where the shooting occurred. The relationship between the two was described by some as being best friends, with suggestions that the shooting might have been accidental, a detail law enforcement did not immediately confirm. The investigation proceeded, and authorities determined they had probable cause to issue a warrant for Colbert's arrest.
Two days after the fatal shooting, on May 5th, Jalyn Colbert turned himself into the Newton County Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and theft by taking. The case moved through the legal system, culminating in a trial where the prosecution argued that the motive behind the shooting was Colbert's attempt to steal Henry's Glock pistol.
