On March 19, 2025, 18-year-old Justin Etienne, a student at Salem High School, was fatally shot at Denny Dobbs Park in Covington, Georgia. The incident occurred during a gathering of students from Rockdale and Newton County schools as part of Senior Skip Day. Authorities responded to reports of a shooting just before 5 p.m. and found Etienne suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
