Henry Perrine, a 43-year-old white male, met a tragic end on August 7, 1840, during an attack on Indian Key, Florida. Perrine, a physician and horticulturist, had moved to Indian Key with his family in late 1838 to escape hostilities on the mainland and to pursue his passion for introducing tropical plants to the United States.
