On August 7, 1840, John Motte, a white male, was tragically killed during the Indian Key Massacre in Indian Key, Florida. This event was part of the broader conflict known as the Seminole Wars. The attack occurred in the early hours of the morning when a group of Seminole Indians landed on the island and launched a surprise assault on the residents. John Motte, who was the master of the wrecking sloop Key West, lived on the island with his wife, two children, and his mother-in-law.
