In the early hours of Mother's Day, May 12, 2024, a violent dispute inside a popular Buckhead nightclub in Atlanta, Georgia, claimed the life of 20-year-old Nakyris M. Ridley. The fatal encounter unfolded at the Elleven45 Lounge on Peachtree Road, where an altercation escalated to gunfire, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy. Ridley, who was identified as the intended target of the shooting, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another individual, 21-year-old Mariam Creighton, was also killed in the shooting, and four other people were injured.
Surveillance footage from inside the nightclub captured the moments leading up to the deadly shooting. Investigators stated that Ridley was seen speaking with another man before approaching and punching 21-year-old Karanji Reese multiple times. In response to the physical altercation, Reese allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting, striking Ridley. The ensuing gunfire also hit the other victims, who police described as innocent bystanders.
In the wake of the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department launched an investigation that quickly identified Karanji Reese as the primary suspect. On June 5, 2024, Reese surrendered to the authorities and was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A Fulton County grand jury later indicted Reese on a 19-count indictment that included multiple charges of murder and aggravated assault. Following his arrest, a judge denied bond for Reese, and a preliminary hearing determined there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
The deadly shooting at Elleven45 Lounge had far-reaching consequences beyond the criminal case against Reese. The nightclub, which had been the subject of prior complaints regarding violence, faced intense scrutiny and legal action. The mother of Ridley's child filed a $5 million wrongful death lawsuit against the lounge, alleging inadequate security. The family of Mariam Creighton also filed a lawsuit against the club. Ultimately, a Fulton County judge ordered the permanent closure of Elleven45 Lounge, deeming it a public nuisance. Court records revealed that Nakyris Ridley had a criminal history that included multiple arrests for carjacking and other auto-related crimes.
