In the spring of 2005, a promising young life was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. Eddie Amaan Dhameer Shaheed, a 17-year-old male, was killed on May 30, 2005. The young man, known to his loved ones as 'Mon,' was walking with friends on Cascade Avenue in the southwestern part of the city when they had a verbal altercation with another group.
As Shaheed turned to walk away from the confrontation, he was fatally shot in the back of the head.
The investigation into Shaheed's murder initially led to the arrest of an individual who was later cleared of the crime, and the case went cold for several years. However, the unwavering determination of Shaheed's family, who persistently communicated with both the police department and the district attorney's office, was instrumental in keeping the case alive. In 2011, a breakthrough occurred when new evidence identified Ronald Fisher as the gunman.
At the time he was charged with Shaheed's murder, Fisher was already incarcerated, serving a life sentence for a separate murder he committed in 2009. In 2013, a jury found Ronald Fisher guilty of the execution-style murder of Eddie Shaheed. During the emotional sentencing, where Fisher professed his innocence and shed tears, the judge handed down a second life sentence, to be served consecutively with his existing one. The conviction brought a sense of justice to Shaheed's family, who had fought tirelessly for years to see the person responsible for their son's death held accountable.
