In the autumn of 2023, a dispute at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex tragically cut short the life of 23-year-old Jihadd Mwaniki. The young man was at the Park at Castleton Apartments on Bent Creek Way on the evening of October 22nd when an argument with another man escalated with deadly finality. Gunshots rang out, and Mwaniki was struck. He was urgently transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into
the shooting led Atlanta police to identify 24-year-old Abubacar Diawara as the individual who had fought with Mwaniki. Less than a month after the fatal encounter, on November 16, 2023, Diawara was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County jail. He is facing charges of murder and aggravated assault in connection with Mwaniki's death. The apartment complex where the shooting occurred has been noted as one of the metro area's more persistently dangerous residential areas, with a history of violent crime.
