In the spring of 2024, the life of a young man with dreams of designing video games and owning a business was tragically cut short on a street in downtown Atlanta. Malachi Darrius Lundy, a 17-year-old male, was known by his family as a beloved son, grandson, brother, and uncle who had a great sense of humor and a strong belief in his faith. This Black / African American teenager, who attended a preparatory academy in Marietta, Georgia, excelled in science and physical education and was an avid
athlete with a particular talent for soccer. He enjoyed participating in 5K runs around the city, some of which supported charitable causes.
On the night of May 21, 2024, events took a fatal turn on Auburn Avenue. Around 11:30 p.m., the owner of a Cadillac confronted three individuals, including Malachi, who were allegedly breaking into his vehicle near the Municipal Market. The confrontation quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire between the car owner and the individuals. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered four people had been shot.
Malachi Darrius Lundy was pronounced dead at the scene from the gunshot wounds he sustained. The car owner and the other two individuals with Malachi were also injured in the shootout and were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. At the time of the incident, police identified Malachi as one of the suspects in the attempted car break-in. It was not immediately clear if the car owner or the two other surviving suspects would face any charges in connection with the incident.
