In the autumn of 2019, a life was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. Dexter Willis, a 38-year-old African American man, was fatally shot on November 2, 2019. The incident that led to his untimely death unfolded at the Westview Grocery on Westview Drive.
Surveillance footage from the convenience store captured a heated argument between Willis and another man.
The verbal altercation escalated dramatically when the other individual pulled out a handgun and fired a single shot, striking Willis in the chest. The gunman then fled the scene. First responders arrived to find Willis with a grievous gunshot wound. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
For more than a year, the man seen in the surveillance video remained at large, becoming one of the Atlanta Police Department's 'Most Wanted.' The break in the case came on December 10, 2020, during a routine traffic stop. An officer observed a vehicle run a red light and pulled the car over. The driver, acting suspiciously, repeatedly attempted to exit the vehicle against the officer's commands.
This unusual behavior prompted the officers to detain him. During questioning, the man provided several false names. However, he was eventually identified as 35-year-old Eddie Laye. A background check revealed that Laye was the wanted suspect in the murder of Dexter Willis. He was arrested and booked into the Fulton County Jail without bond, charged with murder. In addition to the murder charge, Laye also faced several other offenses, including driving under the influence and reckless driving, stemming from the traffic stop that led to his capture.
