Nehemiah Barron, a 22-year-old man known for his upbeat and helpful nature, grew up in Atlanta's Oakland City neighborhood. Those who knew him described the young male as funny, handsome, and charming. He found joy in playing basketball and creating music. A neighbor, Alicia Thompson, recalled how he would often help her with her groceries and her dogs, remembering him as a positive force in their community. "He’s usually the mediator," Thompson said. "He’s always having an upbeat attitude, always smiling, always happy." She expressed her heartbreak over his death, stating, "It's very unfortunate, and it's heartbreaking. Honestly, he wasn't one of those people that you would think that would happen to."

On the morning of September 24, 2026, the Atlanta Fire Department responded to a call about an apartment fire at 1700 Stanton Road in southwest Atlanta. Inside the apartment, firefighters made a grim discovery: the body of Nehemiah Barron. It soon became clear that the fire was not the cause of his death. The Atlanta Police Department determined that Barron had been shot multiple times in the head before the fire was intentionally set. His death was ruled a homicide.

The investigation into Barron's murder quickly led detectives to a suspect. On October 2, 2026, Atlanta police announced they had secured arrest warrants for 23-year-old Robert Demardre Smith. At the time the warrants were served, Smith was already incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail on unrelated charges. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and first-degree arson in connection with Barron's death.

Investigators also linked Smith to another violent incident that occurred just a day before Barron was killed. According to arrest affidavits, on September 23, Smith allegedly opened fire on three people at 1165 Oakland Lane in southwest Atlanta. The incident, which took place between 2:20 p.m. and 2:25 p.m., resulted in injuries to two of the victims, identified as Khaari Please and Lester Witchett. The third individual, Breunta Sales, was shot at but not hit. Smith faced charges of aggravated assault for this attack.

Further investigation into Smith's background revealed a significant criminal history. According to Atlanta police, he had six prior criminal cycles in Georgia for offenses including armed robbery, motor vehicle hijacking, aggravated assault, and rioting in a penal institution. Court records showed that Smith was a convicted felon who had received a 25-year sentence as part of a negotiated plea deal in December of the previous year. However, he was given credit for time served and was serving the remainder of his sentence on probation at the time of Barron's murder.

As of October 2026, Robert Demardre Smith remained in the Fulton County Jail. Investigators have not publicly stated a motive for the killing or clarified if there was a connection between the shooting on September 23 and Nehemiah Barron's murder the following day. The charges against Smith are allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The case is now in the hands of the Fulton County judicial system.
