In the late afternoon of March 16, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the ordinary scene outside an American Deli on Hill Street in southeast Atlanta. When the chaos subsided, 22-year-old Lanorris Dmari McFadden, a male, lay grievously wounded, having been struck by multiple bullets. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The brazen daylight shooting, which took place just before 4 p.m., sent customers scattering for safety and left a community in shock.
The investigation into McFadden's death quickly pointed to a suspect with whom he was acquainted. Security cameras in the vicinity captured the harrowing moments of the attack, showing a man running through a gas station parking lot while firing a handgun at McFadden. Police initially described the incident as an apparent escalation of a domestic dispute, suggesting a personal conflict between the victim and his assailant.
Months after the shooting, a breakthrough in the case led to the arrest of 21-year-old Antoine Whiteside of College Park. In late October 2023, Whiteside was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail. He faced charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with McFadden's death. At the time of his arrest, further details about the nature of his relationship with McFadden were not released. Whiteside was also facing charges for multiple counts of theft from an unrelated incident and was being held without bond.
