In a tragic sequence of events stemming from a soured drug deal, 25-year-old Martrell Gay, a male resident of Atlanta, Georgia, was fatally shot on a Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred on March 7, 2015, inside the West End Food Market located on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard. Gay was shot in the face and, despite being rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a man from North Carolina, Antonio Williams.
Authorities determined that the motive for the killing was revenge. Weeks prior to the shooting, Gay had reportedly stolen $900 from Williams during a marijuana deal. In an act of retaliation, Williams drove over 200 miles from North Carolina to Atlanta with the intent to find Gay. Surveillance footage from the grocery store captured Williams, who was 28 years old at the time, looking through the window before entering. Inside the store, he confronted Gay and shot him at close range.
Following the release of the surveillance video, which showed the suspect with distinctive blond-streaked dreadlocks, multiple tips led to the identification and subsequent arrest of Antonio Williams. His trial concluded with a Fulton County jury convicting him of murder. As a result of the conviction, a judge sentenced Williams to life in prison plus an additional five years. The case highlights a grim journey of vengeance that crossed state lines and ended in a fatal confrontation inside a neighborhood grocery store.
