On the evening of June 29, 2024, what initially appeared to be a motor vehicle accident at a Brooklyn, Maryland intersection unfolded into a homicide investigation with the death of 34-year-old Joshua Ray Holland. Holland, a male resident of Curtis Bay, was discovered with gunshot wounds after he fell out of a vehicle at the intersection of Route 2 North and Orchard Avenue.
Witnesses at the scene described a vehicle coming to an abrupt stop, at which point Holland fell from the driver's
side door onto the road. The vehicle then sped away from the location. First responders transported Holland to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Authorities later located the vehicle involved near Old Riverside Road and Arundel Road.
The investigation into Joshua Ray Holland's death led Anne Arundel County Police to identify a suspect who was also implicated in another recent homicide. On September 10, 2024, detectives charged 18-year-old Deondre Tywon Sharps of Baltimore with the murders of both Joshua Ray Holland and Keion McKenney, who was killed in a separate incident on June 14, 2024. Police have indicated that there appears to be no connection between the two victims. At the time the charges were filed, Sharps was already incarcerated in Baltimore on other matters. The case against Sharps is ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with further information to come forward.
