In the late afternoon of June 25, 2024, tragedy struck in the 300 block of North Lathrop Avenue, near the Port of Savannah. It was there that 27-year-old Lexus Mutcherson was discovered with a gunshot wound. Emergency services transported Mutcherson to a local hospital, but the injuries proved to be fatal.
Authorities investigating the incident stated that the shooting did not appear to be a random act, suggesting that a connection may have existed between the victim and the person or
people responsible. In the immediate aftermath, no suspects were publicly identified as the investigation into Mutcherson's death continued.
A significant development in the case came in October 2024, when Gregory Griffin was indicted for the murder of Mutcherson. Griffin was on parole at the time of the shooting, having a prior conviction for voluntary manslaughter in 2014. In the days following Mutcherson's death, Griffin was involved in a police pursuit that ended in an officer-involved shooting. During this pursuit, he allegedly fired at officers, who returned fire, resulting in Griffin sustaining injuries. Following his recovery, Griffin was charged with malice murder in connection with the death of Lexus Mutcherson.
