In the afternoon hours of March 29, 2022, the life of 42-year-old Anterro Jenks, a male resident of Savannah, Georgia, was tragically cut short. Around 1:30 p.m., police officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of E. 57th Street where they discovered Jenks with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to Memorial Medical Center, but ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting would later reveal a story of a father on his way home, who had stopped to buy candy for his children, only to be targeted for the bonus check he had just received from work.
The Savannah Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an investigation that soon identified two suspects in the fatal shooting. Less than a month after the incident, on April 20, 2022, detectives arrested 23-year-old Jamonta Sha Ron Jones, charging him with murder and criminal attempt to commit a felony. A second suspect, 20-year-old Marquis Quashaw Porter, was taken into custody on May 3, 2022. Porter faced charges of murder and criminal attempt of armed robbery. Both individuals were booked at the Chatham County jail as the investigation continued.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to the family of Anterro Jenks. During the trial, it was revealed that Porter and Jones had seen Jenks with his bonus money at a gas station and proceeded to follow him. Jamonta Jones testified against his co-defendant, which resulted in a reduction of his charges. A jury found Marquis Porter guilty of the robbery and murder of Anterro Jenks. In a subsequent sentencing hearing, after hearing emotional testimony from Jenks's family and Porter's mother, the judge sentenced Porter to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Jones's sentencing was scheduled for a later date.
