In the late afternoon of March 11, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm at the Moss Pointe Apartments on Abercorn Street in Savannah, Georgia. When police arrived at the scene around 2:40 p.m., they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was 30-year-old Joseph Wilder. Both he and the other man, Bernard Greene, were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
For three days, medical personnel worked to save Wilder's life, but
his injuries proved too severe. On the evening of March 14, 2021, Joseph Wilder succumbed to his wounds and passed away. His death transformed the police investigation from an assault case into a homicide inquiry.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Savannah Police Department detectives identified the second man found at the scene, 29-year-old Bernard Greene, as the primary suspect in Wilder's death. The day after Wilder’s passing, on March 15, 2021, authorities arrested Greene and charged him with murder in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation into the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter remained ongoing.
