On a visit to see relatives in Savannah, Georgia, a trip that should have been filled with happy reunions turned into a tragedy for Benjamin Charles Tucker, a 27-year-old male from London, England. In the early morning hours of April 24, 2022, Tucker was at a Timesaver convenience store located at 502 W. Bay St. when gunfire erupted. He sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound and later died from his injuries.
Another man, Henry McDonough, who was 32 years old at the time, was also injured in the shooting but survived.
The incident was described as a random act of violence. Tucker, a lifelong and avid supporter of the Liverpool Football Club, had been in the United States for what was supposed to be a month-long visit with his family. His family described him as a 'smart, loyal and funny man' who was always making those around him happier. In a show of solidarity and remembrance, Liverpool fans organized a round of applause for him during the 28th minute of a Champions League match.
The Savannah Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Georgiamae Lawrence, a 28-year-old woman, was the first to be taken into custody and charged with murder. A second suspect, 43-year-old Corey Reynolds Kent, was arrested on May 12, 2022, and also faces a charge of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Tucker and the wounding of McDonough. The case remains under active investigation by the Savannah Police Department.
