In the early evening of March 2, 2021, a sense of normalcy was shattered on Eisenhower Drive in Savannah, Georgia, when gunfire erupted. Responding to the scene near Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah Police officers discovered a vehicle stopped in the road. Inside, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. The passenger, 51-year-old Sheldon Lovett, succumbed to his injuries.
The driver, identified as 53-year-old Bobby Clark, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition.
The investigation into the double shooting moved swiftly. Detectives quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, believing that the individuals involved were known to one another. The theory that this was a targeted incident spurred a rapid and focused search for the person responsible for Mr. Lovett's death and the serious injury of Mr. Clark.
Less than 24 hours after the fatal shooting, the Savannah Police Department announced a significant development in the case. On the evening of March 3, 2021, they arrested 42-year-old Charlie James Jackson. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Sheldon Lovett. Jackson was taken into custody and booked into the Chatham County jail as the investigation continued. Authorities indicated that further charges could be pending as they continued to delve into the circumstances that led to the deadly encounter on that Tuesday evening.
